Funkenabbrennen Thüringerberg
On Funken Sunday, the Chrochner (schoolchildren) and the Fachilischwinger (boys who set up the funken) go from house to house, reciting their little verses and wishing you good luck. In the evening, with the burning of the funken, winter is symbolically driven out. You can easily remember the date: Funken Sunday is always on the first Sunday of Lent. The funken fire – simply known as funken – is an old fire custom that is still widespread in the Swabian-Alemannic region today. Around the funken tree, a wooden tower is erected, which is then set on fire. Since 2010, the Vorarlberg funken tradition has been part of the intangible cultural heritage of UNESCO in Austria.
