Sonnwend - Chormusik
Under the direction of Philipp Nesensohn (Gioia Choir Bludenz) and Christoph Hartmann (Chamber Choir Innsbruck), the two choirs combine their artistic identities into an atmospheric whole – driven by precision, sound culture, and palpable joy in making music together. The native of Bludenz proposed the idea of uniting both choirs for a joint concert evening.
Exemplifying this are works such as the sonorously radiant “Cantate Domino” by Vytautas Miškinis, the intimate and timelessly charming “Die Nachtigall” by Felix Mendelssohn, as well as the touching “Even when he is silent” by Kim André Arnesen. They reflect the range of the program – from powerful richness of sound to quiet, meditative intensity.
In alternating and joint music-making, a concert emerges that consciously sets contrasts while simultaneously making connecting lines audible. The title “Sonnwend” is more than just a poetic image: it refers to the turning point in the annual cycle, to the balance of light and darkness, to the pause between departure and retreat.
This idea is also reflected musically. Bright, powerful sound surfaces stand alongside quiet, introspective moments; animated passages meet calm, hovering sounds. Like the solstice itself, the concert marks a transition – a moment when time seemingly stands still and at the same time a new phase begins. Thus, “Sonnwend” becomes a sensory experience that translates nature, season, and human feelings into music.
The event culminates in a joint closing piece that captures the special atmosphere of this evening and leaves a lasting resonance.
